This Easter, I brought back a little old-fashioned magic and dyed eggs the natural way—with red onion skins, herbs, and a bit of string. It’s a simple, satisfying tradition that’s surprisingly easy to do (and kind of addictive once you start).
The process is calming, the results are beautiful, and it made me appreciate just how much you can do with everyday ingredients.
🌿 What you’ll need:
- 6 white eggs
- Skins of 1 kg of red onions
- 1 tbsp vinegar
- A light-colored stocking or old pair of tights
- Fresh herbs like parsley
- String or kitchen twine
🧺 How to do it:
- First, clean your eggs to remove any residue.
- Press a small herb leaf (I used parsley) onto each egg.
- Wrap the egg in a piece of stocking, making sure the leaf is snug against the shell, then tie it with string—this step can be a little fiddly, so take your time and don’t rush it.
- Place the eggs and onion skins in a pot. Cover with hot water and add the vinegar.
- Simmer gently for about 20 minutes.
- Let them cool, unwrap carefully, and admire the patterns nature created.
- Optional: rub the eggs with a little oil on kitchen paper for a soft shine.
Each egg turns out completely unique—no two are ever the same.
Happy Easter, and happy experimenting 🌸
